Bora Bora

Bora Bora - Mt. Otemanu

Located in the South Pacific Ocean we can find the set of islands of French Polynesia. They are located between Australia and the United States of America. French Polynesia consists of 118 islands, which are grouped, in five Archipelagos.

The five archipelagos are the Marquesas Islands, which is located in the north east of the islands, which is a group of high islands. Another archipelago is the Tuamotu Islands, which is known for the wonderful coral reefs, the centrally located islands are a set of low islands known as atolls. The Society Islands are located in the west part of the islands. This Tropical archipelago is the most inhabited, and is enriched by lagoons and coral reefs. The southern archipelagos of Austral Islands are ancient (still active) volcanoes. Located at the far eastern part of French Polynesia are the Gambier Islands, which are rarely visited. The main island of this archipelago is Mangareva and all the other islands are eroded remains of the island’s gigantic crater.

The Climate in French Polynesia is moderately tropical, with some hazardous cyclonic storms mostly in January. The average temperature is 80°F (27°C) but if you’re planning to visit you should know that most of the hotels and resorts are air conditioned or have ceiling fans. Summer in the French Polynesia is between November and April in which the weather is very hot and humid. Winter is from May to October where the climate is cooler and drier.

As it get very hot and sticky in the tropics you should pack:

  • lightweight cotton clothes
  • sun screen
  • baseball caps
  • brimmed hat
  • your camera and extra memory cards (this will not help you get cooler)

You should avoid:

  • synthetic fabrics
